What is Pastoral Counseling:

Pastoral counselors are trained in both psychology and theology and thus can provide psychological as well as spiritual guidance to patients and families in health care settings. They perform a variety of tasks including conducting religious masses, delivering religious rites and ordinances, and providing counseling and companionship to patients and family members. They also work with hospital staff to provide ethical and spiritual direction and instruction on religious practices and beliefs. Pastoral counselors differ from other mental health professionals in three distinct ways: (1) they are trained in two disciplines, psychology, and theology; (2) the educational requirements are different, usually requiring a Master of Divinity degree plus other academic work; (3) they are not doctors, and therefore cannot prescribe medicine. They do, however, work closely with other medical professionals as part of a team to ensure that all of the physical and emotional needs of the patient are being met. Pastoral counselors must also remain aware of counselor-client confidentiality, even though state laws concerning this vary greatly. Individuals interested in pastoral counseling should have a solid academic background, enjoy helping a wide variety of people, and have a deep understanding of theology and spirituality.

Faith-Based Treatment

Total Freedom Counseling Center began as a ministry of a local church. Our goal was to provide quality Christian counseling and psychiatric services using qualified professionals. Our services grew quickly, and soon we were receiving referrals from pastors and churches throughout the City of Tampa. Our mission expanded to touch people of all walks of life regardless of their faith. Dramatic changes in our nation’s health care system resulted in greater coverage for mental health concerns, making our counseling services even more accessible to those who needed them most. We saw this as a remarkable outreach opportunity. Motivated by God’s love, Christians have always sought to minister to the needs of their communities physical needs as well as spiritual needs. So, Life Counseling continued in its calling to serve those in need, using the most effective methods possible. Yet we didn’t want to forsake our original mission: offering biblically-based counseling to Christians. All counselors involved in this program are committed Christians, not only demonstrating a living faith and commitment to Christ but also specially trained in the integration of Biblical principles within the counseling process. The therapists of TFCC represent a wide range of denominations, but we’re united in emphasizing a commitment to Christ and faithfulness to God’s Word. Recognizing that God is the one who ultimately provides healing in people’s lives, we rely on Him making Scripture and prayer a crucial part of our work. Our goal is to help Christian clients draw closer to Christ and to find freedom in Him. At the same time, we pray that non-Christian clients will be drawn to His light in our lives.

How to pay for our services:

During the intake process, the therapist will determine your fee, based on your household income and number of people in your family. At this time, we do not accept Medical Assistance (Medicaid) nor do we accept commercial insurance. “No one is ever turned away based on their inability to pay for services.”

Individual and Couples Counseling:

TFCC has a diverse professional staff that works from a variety of theoretical perspectives. We provide individual, couples, and group counseling focused on a range of clinical issues. Clients come to the TFCC for a wide variety of reasons a list of the most common concerns is given here. Many clients who come in for counseling are experiencing depression and anxiety, relationship problems, having problems with there children, emotional problems, alcohol or substance abuse or a similar clinical issue.

Group Counseling:

Group counseling is often the most beneficial option for many client concerns. Group counseling is a form of psychotherapy that usually involves four to ten clients and one or two experienced group therapists. Most therapy groups meet every week at the same time for one or two hours. During that time, the members of the group discuss the issues that are concerning them and offer each other support and feedback. Interpersonal interaction is highly valued and encouraged. Group counseling may be particularly useful for students who are having difficulties in their relationships or who want to learn about themselves and their connections to other people. Group counseling is the only long-term treatment option offered at Total Freedom Counseling Center.
